Medical Definition of Leishmania donovani donovani
1. The type subspecies and agent of visceral leishmaniasis in Asia, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent; a few cases occur in the south central section of the area known as the former USSR, and in Iran, Iraq, and possibly Yemen; the dog and jackal are animal reservoirs. The form in Africa may be this subspecies, though the name Leishmania donovani archibaldi is also used. (05 Mar 2000)
