Medical Definition of Euglena gracilis

1. Phytoflagellate protozoon of the algal order Euglenophyta (zoological order Euglenida). An elongate cell with two flagella, one emerging from a pocket at the anterior end. The organism exhibits positive phototaxis, determined by a photoreceptive spot on the basal part of the flagellum shaft being shielded by a carotenoid containing stigma (eyespot) in the wall of the pocket.
