Medical Definition of Agrobacterium tumifaciens

1. Agrobacterium tumifaciens is a gram-negative bacterim found in soil which causes crown gall disease in plants (which causes tumours to form at the crown and at the junction of the root and stem). The tumours are caused by the Ti plasmid in the bacterium, which is transferred from the bacteria to the plant cells. Because this plasmid is capable of replication in plant cells, it is used as a DNA vector in the genetic manipulation of plants and is being heavilly researched by plant genetic engineers.
