1. An enzyme that reversibly converts xylulose to xylitol using either NADH (d-xylulose reductase) or NADPH (l-xylulose reductase); a deficiency of the l-form is seen in individuals with essential pentosuria. Synonym: xylitol dehydrogenase. (05 Mar 2000)
