Medical Definition of Thylakoid

1. Membranous cisternae of the chloroplast, found as part of the grana and also as single cisternae interconnecting the grana. Contain the photosynthetic pigments, reaction centres and electron transport chain. Each thylakoid consists of a flattened sac of membrane enclosing a narrow intra thylakoid space.
