Medical Definition of Phytohaemagglutinin

1. Sometimes used as synonym for lectins in general, but more usually refers to lectin from seeds of the red kidney bean Phaseolus vulgaris. Binds to oligosaccharide containing N acetyl galactosyl residues. Binds to both B and T lymphocytes, but acts as a mitogen only for T-cells.
