Medical Definition of Pericardial tamponade

1. A life-threatening clinical syndrome where there is a large collection of fluid (usually blood) inside the pericardial space that interferes with the haemodynamic performance of the heart. The end result is low blood pressure, shock and death if untreated. (27 Sep 1997)
