1. A type of connective tissue fibre histochemically distinct from collagen or elastic fibres described in the periodontal ligament and gingivae. Origin: G. Oxys, acid, + talas, suffering, resisting; coined term probably intended to mean "resistant to acid hydrolysis" (05 Mar 2000)
