Medical Definition of N-acetylmuramoyl-l-alanine amidase

An autolytic enzyme bound to the surface of bacterial cell walls. It catalyses the hydrolysis of the link between n-acetylmuramoyl residues and l-amino acid residues in certain cell wall glycopeptides, particularly peptidoglycan.
