Medical Definition of Mammogram

1. A special imaging examination of the breast using X-rays. The purpose of this test is to invesigate or to screen for an underlying breast cancer. The mass itself can be seen on the images, but other features such as calcification may be found in some benign and cancerous lumps. Further investigation of any abnormaliy is required and usually involves a biopsy or fine needle aspiration. (16 Dec 2007)
