A grayish brown limestone, containing fossil shells, which reflect a beautiful play of colours. It is also called fire marble, from its fiery reflections.
Origin: F. Lumachelle, It. Lumachella, fr. Lamachella a little snail, dim. Of lumaca a snail, fr. L. Limax, -acis.
