Medical Definition of Kanamycin sulfate

1. An aminoglycoside antibiotic substance derived from strains of Streptomyces kanamycetius; a thermostable, water-soluble, polybasic substance consisting of two amino sugars glycosidally linked to deoxystreptamine. The antibacterial activity in vitro is nearly identical with that of neomycin and kanamycin sulfate is active against many aerobic Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Aerobacter, Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, Neisseria, Shigella, and Salmonella). Excessive doses and prolonged administration may result in irreversible damage to the auditory portion and/or vesitibular portion of the eighth cranial nerve. (05 Mar 2000)
