1. Noun. (linguistics) A Japanese word whose kanji spelling preserves the meaning, but not the pronunciation, of the individual kanji characters. For example, "now" (? ima) and "morning" (? asa) combine to form ??, meaning "this morning" but pronounced ''kesa'', not ''ima asa''. ¹
