Medical Definition of Hyponatraemia

1. Abnormal decrease in blood sodium concentration. Normal blood sodium should be 136 to 142 milliequivalents per litre. Hyponatraemia can occur secondary to inadequate salt intake, excessive sweating, vomiting or as a drug side effect. Origin: Gr. Haima = blood (11 Jan 1998)
