Medical Definition of Hypocalcemia

1. Abnormally low calciumconcentration, that can result in muscle cramps, abdominal cramps, spasms, and hyperactive deep tendon reflexes. Low blood calcium can be seen in cases of hypoparathyroidism, low vitamin D intake, pregnancy, osteomalacia and certain kidney diseases. Normal blood calcium should be in the range of 8.5 to 10.5 mg/dl. Compare: hypercalcaemia. Origin: Gr. Haima = blood (11 Jan 1998)
