Medical Definition of Dibenzothiazine

1. A group of tranquilising medications with antipsychotic action, thought to act by blocking dopaminergic transmission in the brain. They are used to treat mental, nervous and emotional disorders. Examples include: chlorpromazine, fluphenazine, mesoridazine, perphenazine, prochlorperazine, promazine, thioridazine, trifluoperazine, thiopropazate and triflupromazine. Trifluoperazine binds to and inhibits calmodulin and has been used experimentally to block calcium or calmodulin controlled reactions. (29 Sep 1997)
