Medical Definition of Cytochrome p-450 cyp2e1

1. A polymorphic enzyme that activates carcinogenic n-nitrosamines, benzene, urethane, and other low molecular weight compounds. It is inducible by ethanol and metabilises alcohol. Experimentally, it is used to study the effects of ethanol usage and withdrawal via enzyme markers such as n-nitrosodimethylamine demethylase. Registry number: EC 1.5.99.- (12 Dec 1998)
