Medical Definition of Cis acting

1. Having to do with a genetic element (such as a promoter or other regulatory locus) having an effect (like promotion or suppression) on two unrelated targets (such as genes) on the same chromosome as a result of their relative positions on the chromosome. A gene which regulates the transcription into mRNA of other genes nearby on the same chromosome by binding protein transcription factors which are necessary to turn transcription on or off.
