Medical Definition of Cholesterol monooxygenase

1. Multi-enzyme complex required for the conversion of cholesterol to adrenal cortex hormones. It releases methylpentanoate or isocaproaldehyde and pregnenolone. The complex contains cytochrome p-450, a flavoprotein, a non-haem iron protein, and NADPH. Chemical name: Cholesterol,reduced-adrenal-ferredoxin:oxygen oxidoreductase (side-chain-cleaving) Registry number: EC 1.14.15.6 (12 Dec 1998)
