Medical Definition of Alcoholic ketoacidosis

1. A form of ketoacidosis that results from the overuse of alcohol. A metabolic derangement that occurs when their is an over abundance of ketone bodies (acetone) in the bloodstream. Conditions that encourage the body to begin metabolising fats result in a buildup of ketones in the bloodstream with resultant acidosis (acidifying the blood). (27 Sep 1997)
