Medical Definition of Ziehl-Neelsen stain

1. A method for staining acid-fast bacteria using Ziehl's stain, decolorizing in acid alcohol, and counterstaining with methylene blue; acid-fast organisms appear red, other tissue elements light blue; a modification of this stain is also used for Actinomycetes and Brucella. (05 Mar 2000)
