Definition of Mennonite Low German

1. Proper noun. A group of non-standardized dialects and subdialects of East Low German (specifically a form of Low Prussian originally stemming from West Prussia), influenced by Dutch, High German, and Slavic languages such as Polish, Ukrainian, Russian and later influenced by English, Spanish and Portuguese. These dialects are spoken by Dutch-descended and North German-descended Mennonites, who later migrated to southern Ukraine and now live in various parts of both the Old World and the New World. The two main dialects are the Khortitsa dialect or Old Colony dialect and the Molochna dialect or New Colony dialect. ¹
