Medical Definition of Legg-Perthes disease

1. A disorder characterised by the deterioration of the head of the femur in the hip joint, due to its insufficient blood supply. This disorder occurs most frequently in boys aged 5 to 10 years and tends to run in families. Symptoms include thigh pain, hip pain, knee pain, atrophy of muscles in the thigh, hip stiffness and walking with a limp. (13 Nov 1997)
